The need for career counselling

directions_edited.jpg

Career counselling is a crucial aspect of personal and professional development that helps individuals make informed decisions about their career paths.

It involves

- identifying an individual's skills, interests, values, strengths, weaknesses and personality traits

- providing guidance on the best career options for them based on their aptitude and skills.

- identifying jobs and work environments that are most suitable for their personality and skill sets.

- providing valuable information about various career options and the requirements for the same.

- defining an actionable plan to pursue the career path.

Career counselling can be particularly helpful for individuals who are unsure about their career goals. Overall, career counselling can be a valuable resource for anyone looking to make informed career decisions and achieve their professional aspirations.

The teenage years

Teenagers need career guidance for several reasons. During adolescence they start to develop their identities and sense of self. Confusion, chaos and anxiety are very common and they often feel overwhelmed when they start to think about their future. They are still trying to figure out their likes and dislikes, which includes their interests, strengths, and values, which are important factors when considering a career path. They are in a phase of asserting their independence but at the same time they also look for guidance, support and validation from adults. Career guidance can help teenagers understand themselves, explore their interests and skills, and identify potential career options that align with their goals and aspirations.

Many teenagers are not aware of the various career paths available to them, and the education and training required for each. Career guidance can provide them with such information.

Teenagers often face pressure from parents, peers, and society to choose certain career paths, which may not align with their interests or strengths. Guidance and counselling can help them understand and navigate these pressures, and encourage them to pursue careers that they are passionate about and that align with their goals.
